Casablanca, July 6, 2025 – Morocco continues to strengthen its position as a key African partner for Finland. Driven by shared strategic interests, the two countries are expanding their bilateral cooperation across high-impact sectors such as technology innovation, renewable energy, and digital transformation.
The recent Morocco–Finland Economic Forum, held in Casablanca and co-organized by the CGEM and Business Finland, marked a turning point in the economic roadmap connecting Rabat and Helsinki. The event brought together over 40 Finnish companies seeking to explore investment opportunities in the Kingdom, which is increasingly seen as a regional business hub.
“Morocco plays a central role in our Africa Strategy 2021–2030. It combines political stability, advanced infrastructure, and an open economy,” said Nina Kopola, CEO of Business Finland.
A Key Pillar in Finland’s African Strategy
As Finland aims to double its trade volume with Africa by 2030, Morocco is emerging as a natural gateway to West and Central African markets. Major assets such as the Tanger Med port, free trade zones, and the country’s large-scale industrial and tech projects have caught the attention of Finnish investors.
In this context, Finland plans to deepen partnerships with Moroccan stakeholders in sectors including:
Water & sanitation: sustainable solutions and tech transfer
Green energy: solar, wind, and hydrogen development
Telecom & cybersecurity: 5G rollout, digital infrastructure
Bioeconomy & health tech: biotech, digital health, R&D
Driving the “Digital Morocco 2030” Agenda
Finland’s interest in Morocco’s digital transition aligns with the national strategy Digital Morocco 2030, which aims to position the country as a regional leader in digital transformation. Discussions are already underway with Finnish tech giants like Nokia to support the development of smart infrastructure, AI-based solutions, and secure communication networks.
A Broader Diplomatic Engagement
Beyond economic ties, cooperation extends to governance, talent mobility, and counter-radicalization efforts. In a May 2024 official visit to Rabat, Finnish Parliament Speaker Jussi Halla-aho praised Morocco’s strategic vision and called for stronger bilateral and EU-African dialogue.
“Morocco is a key player in African stability. It offers a promising environment for our businesses and a bridge to Sub-Saharan Africa,” he noted.
High Potential for Long-Term Partnership
Although trade volumes between the two countries remain relatively modest, a solid foundation has now been laid for a structured, long-term partnership. With proactive economic diplomacy, strong sectoral complementarity, and a shared vision of sustainable development, Morocco and Finland are poised to build a model North–South cooperation.
