Agadir, Morocco – February 6, 2025 – The 7th edition of the Halieutis International Fair commenced in Agadir, reaffirming Morocco’s commitment to the sustainable development of the blue economy. This event, held under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, serves as a platform for international exchange and cooperation in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
During the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch highlighted the importance of research and innovation in ensuring a sustainable fisheries industry, aligning with this year’s theme: “Research and Innovation for a Sustainable Fisheries Sector.”
Bilateral Meetings to Foster International Cooperation
On the sidelines of the event, Zakia Driouich, Secretary of State for Maritime Fisheries, conducted a series of bilateral meetings with African and international counterparts to reinforce partnerships and expertise sharing. Among the key discussions:
Africa: Meetings with ministers from Côte d’Ivoire, Somalia, and Gabon focused on sustainable fisheries management, combating illegal fishing, and climate change adaptation.
Russia: Talks with Ilya Shestakov, President of the Federal Agency for Fisheries, addressed the renewal of a bilateral fisheries agreement, including resource preservation, fishing quotas optimization, and technical cooperation.
Oman: Discussions revolved around training programs, monitoring fishing activities, and seafood trade development.
European Union: Meeting with Fernando Andresen Guimarães, Director of International Ocean Governance and Sustainable Fisheries at the European Commission, explored potential collaborations on ocean governance and sustainable fisheries practices.
Morocco’s Leading Role in the Blue Economy
The Moroccan government, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, has positioned itself as a key player in marine resource management and ecosystem preservation. The country’s expertise in fisheries governance was acknowledged by several African ministers who expressed interest in deepening scientific and technical cooperation with Morocco.
