The relationship between Spain and Morocco has undergone a significant evolution in recent decades, within a constantly changing regional and global context. Spain’s traditional strategy of the “cushion of interests,” aimed at maintaining a stable relationship based on managing shared interests and contained differences, has become insufficient to address the current complexity.
The visit of Spanish President Pedro Sánchez to Morocco, invited by the Royal Palace, is a clear indicator of the excellent moment in bilateral relations. This good understanding is reflected both in Europe, where Spain holds indisputable leadership backed by its economic strength and its presidency of the European Union, and in the African continent, where Morocco has achieved unprecedented leadership.
Spain has consolidated an unquestionable image in Europe and worldwide, thanks to its leadership in the European Union and its excellent harmony with key figures such as Ursula von der Leyen. Meanwhile, Morocco has gained prominent prominence on the African continent, presiding over important commissions in the African Union and receiving broad support for its advanced autonomy plan. Moroccan companies lead growth and penetration on the continent, thus consolidating Morocco’s position as a key player in Africa.
These sweet moments in the situation of both countries open the door to a more pragmatic and bold stage in their bilateral relations. It is time to leave behind the disputes of the past and focus on the future, leveraging the determined leadership of leaders committed to strengthening ties between the north and south, and building a solid bridge between Europe and Africa.
While it is important to recognize the conflicts that have marked the history of these relations, it is also essential to capitalize on the achievements made so far as a basis for moving towards even closer and more fruitful collaboration.
In conclusion, the current moment offers the opportunity to open a new chapter in relations between Spain and Morocco, based on complementarity, convergence of interests, and a shared vision of the future. It is a time to look forward with optimism and determination, working together to build a strong and lasting bond that benefits both nations and contributes to development and stability in both Europe and Africa.
