Moroccan phosphate fertilizers have returned to the US market with the arrival in New Orleans of the first shipment since the US administration temporarily suspended countervailing duties on imports from Morocco.
OCP North America, a subsidiary of Morocco’s OCP Group, announced that the vessel was carrying approximately 54,000 tonnes of Triple Superphosphate (TSP). The fertilizer will be delivered directly to American farmers ahead of the fall planting season, a period traditionally marked by increased demand for agricultural inputs.
The shipment represents the effective resumption of Moroccan fertilizer exports to the United States after countervailing duties imposed in recent years restricted market access and reduced the range of supply options available to US farmers.
Return After Years of Trade Restrictions
The shipment follows the US administration’s decision, announced on June 29, to temporarily suspend countervailing duties on Moroccan phosphate fertilizer imports.
Following the announcement, OCP Group held consultations with the US Department of Commerce and other relevant authorities to clarify how the suspension would be implemented and to ensure full compliance with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
Once the necessary guidance had been obtained and customer demand confirmed, the company was able to resume deliveries to the US market during the temporary suspension period.
Kevin Kimm, Chief Executive Officer of OCP North America, said the shipment reflected the company’s continued commitment to serving the American agricultural market. He added that OCP’s immediate priority was to increase available supplies and ensure that fertilizers reach farmers when they need them most.
Easing Pressure on American Farmers
The return of Moroccan fertilizers comes at a time when the US phosphate fertilizer market continues to face significant supply pressures.
More than five years of restricted access to Moroccan products have narrowed the sourcing options available to the American agricultural sector. At the same time, domestic phosphate mining in the United States has declined by more than 50 percent since 1995, increasing farmers’ reliance on imported fertilizers.
Amid limited availability and uncertain market conditions, many American farmers reportedly postponed fertilizer application decisions for the current season while awaiting improved supplies and greater price stability.
The arrival of the Moroccan shipment is therefore expected to ease pressure on the market and improve fertilizer availability ahead of fall planting operations.
Greater Flexibility in Crop Nutrition
Triple Superphosphate plays a key role in OCP Group’s customised plant nutrition solutions because it provides phosphorus independently from other nutrients.
This gives farmers greater flexibility to tailor fertilizer programmes to the specific needs of their crops and soils, rather than applying nutrients in fixed combinations that may not correspond to local agricultural conditions.
The product is also consistent with the “4R” Nutrient Stewardship principles, which promote the use of the right nutrient source, at the right rate, at the right time and in the right place.
TSP can therefore help American farmers manage nutrient applications more precisely, improve the efficiency of their fertilizer programmes and respond more effectively to the characteristics of individual crops, soils and regions.
Jorf Lasfar at the Heart of the Supply Chain
The shipment also carries significant industrial and logistical importance. It originated from the Jorf Lasfar platform, one of OCP Group’s principal industrial hubs and a major production centre for fertilizers destined for international markets.
The operation illustrates the integration of the Group’s value chain, extending from phosphate extraction and processing in Morocco to maritime transportation and distribution across the United States.
It also demonstrates the Moroccan fertilizer industry’s ability to respond rapidly to the needs of one of the world’s largest agricultural markets at a time when global phosphate fertilizer supply chains remain under considerable pressure.
Long-Term Visibility Remains Essential
OCP North America reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with farmers, customers and other agricultural stakeholders to strengthen the resilience of US fertilizer supply chains.
While the temporary suspension of duties is expected to improve availability in the short term, securing stable and sustainable supplies will require greater clarity and predictability over the longer term.
Such visibility would enable OCP Group to plan future investments more effectively and determine the production and logistics capacity allocated to the US market. It would also help ensure that American farmers have reliable access to the phosphate fertilizers required to maintain agricultural productivity and strengthen food security.
