The Gibraltar–Tangier ferry service has officially come to an end after approximately 25 years of operation, following the implementation of the new UK–EU treaty arrangements concerning Gibraltar.
To mark the occasion, executive members of the Gibraltar Morocco Business Association (GMBA) and trustees of the Strait of Gibraltar Association Trust (SGA Trust) attended a reception hosted by the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, the Hon. Fabian Picardo KC MP, at the Mayor’s Parlour in City Hall.
The reception was held to honour and thank the companies that operated this historic maritime route, namely FRS and subsequently DFDS, in recognition of their commitment to maintaining the connection between the two shores over the past quarter of a century.
The Gibraltar–Tangier ferry service was far more than a means of maritime transport. It served as a human and economic bridge, bringing families together, facilitating tourism and trade, supporting businesses and strengthening the longstanding friendship between Gibraltar and the Kingdom of Morocco.
The GMBA and SGA Trust expressed their sincere appreciation to everyone who contributed to the service’s success over the years. They stressed that its legacy will endure through the countless personal and commercial relationships it helped create.
Despite the conclusion of this chapter, both organisations reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening relations between Morocco and Gibraltar and exploring new opportunities for cooperation and partnership in the years ahead.
The reception concluded with a message of gratitude to FRS and DFDS for 25 years of dedicated service across the Strait of Gibraltar.
