Rabat – The annual meeting of the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and key sustainability indicators kicked off on Wednesday in Rabat, bringing together 58 representatives from 22 supreme audit institutions, alongside Moroccan and international experts.

The two-day meeting aims to capitalize on best practices and promote exchanges on the role of supreme audit institutions in monitoring the implementation of SDGs, with a view to improving audit methodologies and supporting public policies related to sustainable development.

Speaking on the occasion, First President of the Court of Accounts Zineb El Adaoui highlighted the profound transformation of the concept of development over the past two decades, noting the shift from purely economic metrics to more human-centered and qualitative approaches, leading to the emergence of human and sustainable development concepts.

She stressed that Morocco has embarked on a new generation of integrated territorial development programs, in line with the High Guidelines of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, aimed at ensuring tangible impact on citizens through effective monitoring, auditing, and evaluation mechanisms.

El Adaoui also underlined the Court of Accounts’ active contribution to international initiatives related to SDGs, reaffirming its commitment to supporting the work of INTOSAI and Arab Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (ARABOSAI) in advancing sustainable development.

For his part, Dmitry Zaitsev, head of the INTOSAI working group secretariat on SDGs and member of the Board of the Accounts Chamber of the Russian Federation, noted significant progress and strong member engagement over the past year, while warning of a “clear slowdown” in achieving the 2030 Agenda goals, according to recent UN assessments.

He pointed out that major challenges persist in key areas such as climate action, biodiversity protection and sustainable development, stressing that data gaps continue to hinder effective policymaking.

“These challenges particularly affect key areas such as climate action, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development, which require systemic transformations,” he noted, pointing out that data gaps hinder effective policymaking.

Zaitsev further emphasized the crucial role of supreme audit institutions in enhancing international cooperation, developing common methodologies and sharing best practices to improve public policy efficiency and support the achievement of SDGs.
