The city of Tangier is preparing to welcome one of the most prestigious international youth sailing events as it hosts the Optimist World Championship 2026 at the Royal Yacht Club of Tangier from June 18 to June 28, under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

This major sporting event highlights Morocco’s growing reputation as a leading destination for international competitions and reflects the confidence that global sailing authorities place in the Kingdom’s sports and maritime infrastructure.

The championship is expected to bring together approximately 250 young sailors under the age of 15 from around 60 countries, turning Tangier into a global hub for youth sailing and offering an exceptional opportunity to showcase the city’s tourism, economic, and maritime potential.

Morocco was awarded the right to host the championship following the unanimous approval of its bid during the International Optimist Dinghy Association General Assembly held in Mar del Plata in December 2024.

Beyond its sporting significance, the event is expected to generate substantial economic and tourism benefits by attracting athletes, officials, accompanying delegations, and international media representatives. It will further strengthen Tangier’s position as a premier destination for maritime sports and sports tourism in the Mediterranean region.

The Optimist World Championship is widely recognized as one of the most important youth sailing competitions in the world. It serves as a launching platform for future champions, with many Olympic and world-class sailors having begun their careers in the Optimist class.

By hosting this global event, Morocco once again demonstrates its ability to organize world-class international competitions while reinforcing Tangier’s status as a dynamic and internationally connected city.
